AP (Indianapolis)— In Saturday night’s Big Ten championship game, Oregon and Penn State amassed seven touchdowns, 537 yards, 28 first downs, and 55 points.
In the first half, that is.
At the end of the first half, the Ducks were ahead 31–24. The 55 points broke a previous title game first-half scoring record of 52 points shared by Nebraska and Wisconsin in 2012.
By the half, Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel had three touchdowns and 157 yards. Drew Allar of Penn State has passed for two touchdowns and 154 yards.
The teams exceeded the over/under for the whole game, which was 51 points, in just a little over 28 minutes.
The teams did combine for three punts despite all that offensive activity. Oregon also made a turnover. Early in the second quarter, Dontae Manning intercepted Allar and returned it to the Penn State 1 to set up a touchdown that increased the score to 28–10.
The fact that this half will not be remembered for defense, however, was best demonstrated in the first quarter when Kobe King, a gassed Penn State linebacker, leaned over and puked in his end zone as the Ducks were attempting to score their second touchdown.
